Community Development
Volunteer Registry is available through Joanne Johnson at FCSS at 786-2416. Joanne is available to help with volunteer information and requirements.

- We are in the process of establishing a master list of volunteers so we are able to help our Community Groups/Clubs with needed volunteers or Casino workers for fundraising.
- We also have a volunteer Disaster Services team. If you are interested in becoming a part of this very worthwhile team, call Joanne.
- Grant Information is available through Joanne Johnson at FCSS at 786-2416. If you have questions on grants available to community groups Joanne would be happy to assist you in obtaining application forms, or with information on criteria.
- Interagency meetings are held at the Pentecostal Church basement with lunch available for $5.00. This is an information meeting where community and provincial agencies get together for sharing information. The dates for Interagency meetings held at 11:45 a.m. are:

- Home Town Welcome program is for new people to Mayerthorpe. A basket of items are given out with new resident information on living in Mayerthorpe.
Youth Programs
- TEEN CENTER program is held at J-4 Junction (north on Hwy 22 just over the railway tracks). Our TeenCenter is open for lunch on school days for Junior and Senior High. We have a free soup program from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., and is easily accessible from the Jr. Sr. High School. Youth are welcome to come and have soup Monday - Thursday over the lunch hour. The TeenCenter is also open for a drop in program for 10 – 15year olds from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Crafts, games, pool are just a few activities available. There are computers available for homework.
- P.A.R.T.Y. program is Prevention of Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth and is a one day experience where grade 9 students:
- Meet professionals that would provide care in a trauma situation,
- Are presented with facts about head and spinal cord injury,
- Have hands-on experience with the equipment used in trauma care and rehabilitation,
- Tour through the Emergency Room, viewing a simulated patient and the equipment used in their care.
- Observe the path of an injury survivor, from pre-hospital care through to rehabilitation.
- Are given an injury survivor presentation, have the opportunity to ask questions of the injury survivor to gain a better understanding of the consequences of a traumatic event.
- This presentation leaves an impression that for some lasts a lifetime.
The 5 key messages promoted in the P.A.R.T.Y. program are:

- S.A.D.D. program is Students Against Drinking & Driving. S.A.D.D. is an organization based out of schools but extends into the home and community. S.A.D.D. was built on the philosophy of youth empowering youth. The 3 key messages promoted in S.A.D.D. are
- Friends don’t let friends drink and drive.
- Do not drive with anyone who has been drinking.
- Do not drink and drive yourself.
- St. John Ambulance WHAT EVERY BABYSITTER SHOULD KNOW program is held 2 to 3 times per year for youth 12 years of age. Lists of babysitters who have passed the course are available for families in need of babysitters. Current programs will be running again soon watch for dates. Registration is necessary.
- Mayerthorpe & Area FCSS provides financial support to the D.A.R.E. program, in partnership with the R.C.M.P. The program taught to Grade 5 and 6 youth provides Drug Abuse Resistance Education. This program is a comprehensive prevention education program designed to equip elementary school children with skills to recognize and resist social pressures such as experimentation with tobacco, alcohol, other drugs and violence.
- Mayerthorpe & Area FCSS also provides financial support for the “COOL” Camp that is a mentoring program designed for grade 8 students. This program provides students with information, which will assist them in making wise and informed choices regarding their personal development. The program helps teens recognize and resist various pressures including pressures towards early sexual involvement. It helps teens to explore strategies for dealing with these pressures. Although protection from disease and pregnancy is covered throughout the program, the emphasis is always on abstinence.
Senior Centre
- Senior Outreach program is held at the Senior Friendship Center (next to the Town Office). The Senior Outreach worker is available from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon Monday to Thursday. The phone number to the Center is 786-4153. Ann Walsh is available to help with questions relating to transportation, information, Senior’s programs and assistance. - Regular weekday activities at the Friendship Center include fresh coffee and muffins Monday to Friday, 9:30 a.m. to noon (cinnamon buns on Tuesdays). On the 3rd Monday of each month from September - June, there is live music at 1:00 p.m. There is a pool table and shuffleboard, so there is fun and fellowship for all ages. Everyone is Welcome.
- Mayerthorpe & Area FCSS provides financial support for a Gentle Fitness for Seniors program, which is held at Pleasantview Lodge Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. This program is intended to improve the muscular strength, physical abilities, energy and overall independence of seniors. All seniors are welcome.
Early Childhood Development
- Moms, Dads & Tots is a free drop in program for parents with their babies, toddlers, and pre-school children. There are stories, crafts, snacks, and a great opportunity to meet other families. Led by instructor Sue Curtis (“Miss Sue”) this is a great program for getting out and socializing. Moms, Dads & Tots is held on Monday mornings from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the Playgroup room.

Playgroup is a drop off program for three and four year olds. Based on “creative fun, learning through play” the playgroup will provide a stimulating environment in which the child can expand their knowledge, skills, confidence and social behavior. There are one-day or two-day programs available for both age groups. Rates are $75.00 for the one-day program, or $120.00 for the two-day program, for a three-month session. Sessions run from Sept to Dec, Jan to March, April to June.

Library Storytime is a free drop in program held at the Library for families with children 0 – 6 years of age. Storytime is held on Monday afternoons from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome. K – 3 are welcome to participate in Storytime from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m.

Tumble Tots is a free drop in program for preschool children at the Diamond Center Thursday mornings 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.
