Introduction:

Across Alberta general municipal elections are held every three years for mayors, councillors, municipal districts electoral area directors, and school board trustees as per the alberta Local Authorities Election Act, Revised Statutes of Alberta 2000 Chapter L-21.

General voting day is always the third Monday in October.  The next Municipal Election will be held Monday October 18, 2010.  Candidates are voted in for a three year term.

Who can Vote?

You may vote in an Alberta local election as a resident elector if you:
  1. are a Canadian Citizen;
  2. are 18 years of age or more on general voting day;
  3. have lived in Alberta for at least six months before you register to vote; and
  4. have lived in the municipality, regional district or school district where you wish to vote for 30 days or more before you register to vote.

Who is eligable to run as a Council Candidate?

You qualify as a candidate for municipal council if you:
  1. are eligable to vote in that election
  2. have been a resident of the local juristriction, and the electoral division in which you are running for the 6 consecutive months before nomination day, and
  3. are not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.
You are not eligible to be nominated as a candidate if you:
  1. are the Town auditor.
  2. are an emplyee of the Town unless you are on leave of absence as granted under the Local Authorities Election Act.
  3. are indebted to the Town for taxes exceeding $50.00, excluding current taxes and any outstanding taxes for which the person has entered into an agreement with theTown for payment.
  4. you are indebted to the Town for any debt exceeding $500.00 and in default more than 90 days.
  5. have, within the previous ten years, been convicted of an offence under the Local Authorites Election Act.
