Bring Your Identification

The Local Authorities Election Act has been amended to include a requirement for voters to produce identification.  Acceptable identification is either:

  • One piece of government issued picture identification that contains the person’s name and current address such as a driver’s license  OR
  • One piece of identification with name and current address that has been authorized by the chief Electoral Officer under the Local Authorities Election Act

The Town of Mayerthorpe passed Bylaw No. 988 to include the following types of identification that will be accepted along with what’s required by law.

  • Correspondence issued by a hospital, auxiliary hospital, nursing home or seniors’ or special care accommodation facility such as a letter of stay, admission form, or patient profile sheet that attests to the person’s residency at that facility and provides the person’s name or current municipal address or legal description of residency;
  • Correspondence from the Town of Mayerthorpe, the Government of Alberta, or the Government of Canada (or one of their agencies) setting out the person’s name and municipal address or legal description of residence, together with proof of age issued by the Government of Alberta or Government of Canada (or one of their agencies).
