Living
As Mayerthorpe is primarily an agriculturally based community, virtually any type of farm exists in the vicinity, from wild game farms (elk, buffalo, wild boar and deer) to large cattle, pig and sheep farms. We can even boast that there is a local equestrian centre nearby. Major community events revolve around agriculture. Mayerthorpe has an annual rodeo held in May, in which our three local heroes got their start - Rod and Denny Hay and Denny Golden - Canadian Finals Rodeo Champions; and the Mayerthorpe Agricultural Fair held the second weekend in August.
The Agricultural fair has traditional events, such as the bench show of agricultural products, a parade and midway activities. One of the many events in town is the Hay Brothers Golf Tournament in September - a major fundraiser for the Mayerthorpe Area Community Foundation - a registered charity that accepts gifts/donations, setting up a Saving's Account (permanent endowment) for our communities....the interest income earned from investments made with the money will go back to the communities in the form of grants to support various groups and projects!
Located within a few kilometres, are many lakes and rivers that boast excellent fishing, picnic and camping areas. An abundance of wildlife such as moose, elk and deer are regularly spotted in the area.
